Cimarron Family Practice is a medical office, opening May 1st, 2026 in Montrose, CO. It uses a membership-based healthcare model called Direct Primary Care.
I want to provide high-quality healthcare that is accessible and personable.
— Doctor Katherine Stephens
No more long waits
By capping my patient panel, I plan to offer same or next-day appointments, and will be open at least one evening a week so those at work can see their doctor.
No more rushed appointments
The vast majority of appointments will be hour-long. (I may offer 30min evening appointments if they are in demand!)
Consistency is key
Your appointments will only ever be with me. When you send a message, it comes directly to me. No more having to repeat yourself to another new face.

Hello! I’m Dr. Katherine Stephens, a board-certified family physician and the founder of Cimarron Family Practice. I created this practice to offer the kind of primary care I believe patients deserve: thoughtful, accessible, relationship-based care with time to listen and space to think.
I completed medical school at the University of Manchester in England from 2002–2007, followed by five years of postgraduate medical training (2007–2012). My training included three and a half years of hospital-based rotations including cardiology, pulmonology, otolaryngology (ENT), emergency medicine, and endocrinology, as well as one and a half years of focused primary care training. I have worked as a family doctor since 2012 and am board certified as a General Practitioner in the United Kingdom and also board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. After earning a top score on the certification exam, I was honored to be invited as part of a small group of physicians nationwide to participate in the standard-setting process for future board examinations.
My two decades of experience in medicine has shaped how I approach patient care. I value careful evaluation, continuity, and seeing the whole person—not just a diagnosis or a single visit. Over time, I found that traditional, insurance-driven primary care made it increasingly difficult to practice medicine in a way that aligned with these values, while still maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
That’s why I chose the direct primary care (DPC) model. DPC allows me to spend meaningful time with patients, provide easier access to care, and focus on prevention and long-term health rather than volume and paperwork. Having the time to truly explain the pathophysiology behind chronic conditions to patients makes a meaningful difference. I especially enjoy helping patients safely reduce or discontinue medications when appropriate, as we address the underlying causes of disease through education, lifestyle changes, and shared decision-making. In many cases, conditions can significantly improve—or even resolve—when patients understand what’s happening in their bodies and are supported in making sustainable changes.
Although I grew up in Hong Kong, Western Colorado has been part of my life since childhood. I began visiting Cimarron in the summers starting at age five, and my family’s roots in the area run deep—my dad grew up in Olathe. Those early experiences shaped my love for this region and ultimately led me back to be near family and build my practice here.
At Cimarron Family Practice, I provide comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages, including preventive care, chronic disease management, acute illness visits, and home visits when appropriate. I emphasize clear communication, shared decision-making, and building long-term relationships based on trust.
Outside of medicine, I enjoy making the most of life in Western Colorado. I love climbing, snowboarding, hiking, and running, and I value time outdoors as an important part of overall health and well-being. Most of all, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two children, and being part of the community where we live and work.
